Day 11 (Naples, Italy)

Our final stop was Naples, Italy. Yes, the same name as the city in Florida, but much much different. Naples, which is 158 nautical miles away from Santorini, is an old city. It is the third largest city of Italy after Milan and Rome. It was the largest kingdom as far as land goes back in the days and is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world.

We were greeted into Naples by rain and water. Not only that, we booked a tour and they were an hour late picking us up. Eventually we made our way to the old town of Pompeii. It, too, contained an old civilization that was destroyed over time. In this case, Pompeii was buried in ash and pumice from the eruption of the nearby volcano (Mount Versuvius) back in 79 AD. Today, much of the city has been excavated and much of the city is still in decent shape. Although it was a wet visit, we were still able to see quite a bit.

Old time pedestrian walkway

Check out how good the fresco painting still looks!
When the volcano erupted, almost the entire population died. Some died because they were buried in lava, others because of the gas released by the volcano. The following picture is a little disturbing, but kind of cool at the same time. A couple years back, when archaeologist were digging in the old city, they found human remains. As an attempt to understand the situation back then, they poured plaster into the empty space in the magma left by where the body use to be. After they broke the magma, the shape of the figure and details (like a belt) remained.

The skull is real, but the rest of the body is plaster

More of the city:

This was ingenius! This was one of the public baths of Pompeii. The picture below features the sauna. It was a wet sauna, so when the water accumilates, it would drip from the ceiling. To prevent this problem, they made a dome shaped ceiling so the water would follow the slope and drip against the walls instead of falling down straightwards. Genius!

After leaving Pompeii, we decided to explore some of Naples on our own. However, we did not stay out too long. Naples is known for pickpockets. Supposedly they can take the watch off your hand without you even noticing!

Pretty!
As the ship sailed away, the skies began to clear up. Luckily too because we were able to see the volcano more clearly. This is an active volcano, meaning it can erupt at any time. I've never seen one before so it was kind of cool. They skies were still a little blurry, but you get the picture.

Our last night for dinner we went a little later (that's why my pictures didn't come out too good =P)

Sauteed Fishcakes
Honey-glazed Kobe Beef Style Meatloaf
Rum Cake with a Cinnamon Ice-cream
Oh.....and this wasn't from that night, but I forgot to post it earlier. The Hot Glass Show preformed a couple of times at night and they promised us that they would turn off the lights. It was pretty interesting to watch as the light given off by the heat of the glass was being manipulated and shaped. Definitely cool.

Well.........that's the end of our trip. We returned to Rome and debarked the next day. The trip home was definitely much smoother than the trip over. However, somethings don't change. It was stil gray and raining in Rome.

We had a wonderful time on our honeymoon. It is definitely a memory we will hold onto dearly. Everyone on the cruise was wonderful and we were able to see and experience a lot of new things. Until next time!

Day 10 (Day 3 at sea)

Day 10 was our last day at sea as we sailed 677 Nautical Miles to Naples, Italy.

It was a much needed day for rest and relaxation. We not only walked a lot the last couple of the days, but we also took in a lot of sun.

Being in Aqua class, we had access to special rooms such as the "relaxation room." It was a room with comfortable lounge chairs in the front of the boat. It had floor to ceiling windows, so we had a pretty nice view. It was also very quiet and peaceful. I almost fell asleep in there!

Relaxation room
Remember how I told you that the Hot Glass show is a non profit organization? Well, legally they are not allowed to sell their piece and make money. However, they are allow to sell 4 pieces. One by each glass blower for a scholarship at the museum of glass, and a 4th piece for the breast cancer foundation. On the last sea day, they hold an auction for those piece. They're some magnificent pieces and would cost several hundred to a thousand or more at a retail store. I think they raised about $2000 that day.
Jamie, Dan and Matt at the auction
So what happens to all the other pieces that they make throughout the cruise? They raffle it off! At random shows, they will give away raffle tickets and raffle off some pieces. We were super lucky and believe it or not, we won two different times! So we got to lug home two medium sized glass pieces as a great souvenir of our honeymoon! (pictures were taken back in Paris)

For lunch we decided to relax some more and stay away from the crowds of the dining room. Instead, we carried plates of food back to the room and ate on our balcony!

This night was also the second and final formal night for our stay. They had even more food than usual!

Baked Goat Cheese with Orange Essence and Pecan Honey Dressing
Chilled Sweet Pea soup with Crab Salad and Toasted Almonds
The Intermezzo: Citrus Sorbet
Lobster
Lychee and Cassis Gelee
Victoria Pineapple.....something....forgot the name =P

Day 6 (Istanbul Day2)

We got to stay in Istanbul for another half a day before heading to Kusadasi. For day 2, we did not have a guide. We decided to walk around on our own an hit up a couple places that we didn't get to yesterday.

First we took a old school trolly uphill. It took us a little bit to find, but we finally reached the Galata Tower. It is a medivel stone tower built in the 14th century. It sits on top of a hill and can been from far away. We were able to see it from our veranda. When we finally reached the tower, we had to go up. Luckily......they have elevators ^_^ Yes, Jon, it's the tower he climbs up in Assassin's Creed.

The ship from the top of the tower
The Blue Mosque
The Haggia Sophia
Other Mosques
While traveling........we came a lot of stray cats and dogs. The tour guide told us that the government catches them, gives them their shots, neuter and tag them then sets them back out. I can't help but to take pictures of some of them!

After the Galata Tower, we walked downhill all the way to the Spice Market. It was pretty neat. It had a lot of interesting spices, foods and teas. Very crowded tho.

We got back on the boat in time to change and catch the next Hot Glass show!

It's almost done!

We also got to catch the sunset as the boat sailed away from Istanbul towards Kusadasi.

I guess we were too hungy that night because I only remembered to take a picture of the appetizer and salad =P

Day 2 (Day 1 at Sea)

From Rome we sailed to Mykonos. However, it was a long ride over (821 nautical miles) so we had a day at sea.

We crossed the Strait of Messina.....which is the little path of water in the foot of the boot; between the eastern tip of Sicily and the southern tip of Calabria in the south of Italy:

"X" marks the spot!
Strait of Messina
There were many activities to do on the ship.

One of our favorite thing to attend was a Hot Glass Show. Yes.....the ship had a hot glass stage set up. There are 3 people who are sent over by Corning Museum of Glass to put on shows and educate the general public about glass and glass making. They are a non profit organization, so they are there purely for education and not to sell things. We attended many of their shows. It was very cool to watch. You would watch this molten liquid turn into a beautiful vase or bowl. The people who did the show were also very funny and entertaining.

Almost done!
The night was also formal night. So we got dressed up for dinner!

Us in Blu
And what did I eat for formal night??:

Pan Fried Macadamia Crusted Sea Scallops with a Pink Grapefruit Emulsion
California Blue Crab Bisque with Caviar and Scallions
Herb Crusted Rack of Lamb
I forgot to take a picture of dessert that night, but I think I got a pecan honey icecream or something like that. Delicious!
